So I am sharing a quick post about a pending domain name sale that is being brokered through Godaddy. The domain name is BeholdaWhiteHorse.com and we have owned it for many years, and about a week ago we got contacted by an Godaddy agent stating that somebody is interested in our domain name, and has offered $1000 dollars.
I called Godaddy and explained that I wasn’t interested in selling the domain name for that price, and that I wouldn’t consider anything under $5000, and went on to explain some other historical points of how I bought the domain name, and some other talking points, etc.
I also explained that since I have begun buying domain names (over 10 years now) I have sold less then two domain names!
Basically I stated to Luke (Godaddy agent) that I am an investor / developer and that if I am not developing my domain names I am leasing them to other companies.
So what happened next?
The very next day I was offered $4000 dollars for this domain name.
Immediately it sparked an oh crap response. Not because I need the $4000 dollars for this domain name, but because of the fact that this $50 dollar or so investment (registration fee’s over the last 5 years or so) had just received a pretty decent offer. So what did I do next?
I explained to Luke that the offer was under my $5000 minimum bid and that I wasn’t going to accept the offer.
Luke and I had some more back and forth on this, and he basically stated, “listen, you are saying you will not consider offers of $5000 or less, what if they offer you $5000?” Saying ths, I had seen his point. Ultimately I wasn’t sure what to respond or set the price at, as I never even thought of selling this domain name in the first place…it was just sitting there, like 1000 or so of my other domain names do.
So my wife and kids were waiting for me to head down the block to our beach…and I had already been up and working since 7am, and it was now 6:25pm, so I said $7,200 dollars will deliver the domain name to the client with no further haggeling or back and forth bidding.
So it’s 9:39pm and I am back home sharing the drama of a domain name sale…my second domain name ever to be sold by me (if it goes thru). Am I crazy for not jumping on the $1000 dollars, or the counter of $4000 dollars? I don’t think so. But it always helps when you don’t need the cash!
So I’ll be online for a few more hours, working on client websites, emailing my team oversea’s the new tasks to be completed, and following up on any items needing my attention. Am I anxious to see what they respond in regard to my $7,200 dollar counter? Sure I am…but believe it or not it absolutely has nothing to do with the money, but rather the excitement of negotiating and selling one of the first domain names I ever sold!
