Domain Name Monetization Strategies

Domain name monetization is not domain selling. Domain selling is, selling domain names. Those who ‘flip’ domain names buy domains with the intention of selling them at a later time for profit.

I start off with this because I have been receiving lots of emails from people asking me for advice on ‘monetizing’ their domains by brokering them ‘for top dollar’.

Now many of the domain names don’t even meet the criteria where I feel I can assist them, meaning to be able to turn a profit for us both. However just to explain what I mean by domain monetization I am referring to:

1.) Directly leasing the domain name

2.) Developing the domain name and then leasing it to those who can benefit from the developed domain.

3.) Developing the domain name and monetizing it through ad sales and onsite ad integrations, affiliate programs, sponsored content, product offers, etc.

4.) Develop the domain name into a lead generation site.

Which direction we go when developing a domain name is based uniquely on the domain, the market, and the income goals we outline from the onset.

My strategy for developing domain names is three fold:

1.) Identify and develop domains for my own personal or business use, typically to segment a market I’m focusing on.

2.) Do the same for those I serve.

3.) Develop and rank domain names for immediate or future monetization.

For number 3 I have wrote about this on a few occasions where I’m continuously ‘planting seeds’ that can be harvested at a later time. It’s be a proven domain development and monetization strategy for me without fail.

Monetize Your Domain Names

If you own a large domain name portfolio and you’re always looking to get more of them developed and earning you’re not alone.

Monetizing your domain names can make the difference between expansion and failure for those who own large domain portfolios and aren’t looking to flip their domains, or can’t sell them quick enough to generate the capital needed.

Developing and monetizing a subset of your domain portfolio can generate enough income to carry your other domains that aren’t earning for you yet.

I focus on domain development and monetization, for myself and my clients. Along the way I do sell some domain names, but it’s not often this occurs. I buy, hold, develop, and focus on domain name monetization strategies.

Leasing Domain Names in 2016

What a great year 2015 was to be in the domain name leasing business! We are on our way to making 2016 our best year yet, and we want to share the success with you. This requires us to change course; slightly.

In prior years we developed domain names that we own and leased the domain names to clients of ours, or we used them to generate leads or divert traffic to other sites.

We also developed domain names for other domain owners and leased those domains to clients that seen the value in a developed domain name that could easily be put into play for them.

In 2016 this will not change. So what will change?

Premium domain name development and leasing

In 2016 we will focus almost entirely on developing premium domain names and finding clients (or tapping into our client base) that want to lease premium domain names.

We will also focus more on developing our domain name portfolio both for our own use and to lease developed domain names to clients. We have created an efficient, effective domain name development and leasing strategy over the last few years and now want to compound the results into greater successes.

Domain Name Development is something we’ve been doing since 2004.

Also in the past few years we would take ‘good’ domain names from clients that just wanted to lease them to other companies (without developing them first) and contract lease agreements only. We would receive our commission when we found a client to lease the domain to.

We will continue providing this service moving forward however only for clients with great domain names; one word domains, awesome category killers, GEO domains. We will stay clear of brandable domains and other domains that don’t fit the list described above.

Domain Name Development

Our domain name development services will still offered to all domain owners. If you have a premium domain name as outlined above; we are willing to contract to lease the domain without developing it first.

If your domain isn’t a premium domain but you still want to develop it, we can help. Our domain name development services will still be offered. After developing your domain name there may be opportunities for us to assist you with monetization or leasing services, but that will be on a case by case basis.

2016 will be the year that I also complete and publish the strategies, case studies, how to’s, and resource guide all rolled up into an ebook for anyone looking to get started in the domain name business.

Developing Domains-Be Prepared

Are you looking for a domain name development company? If you own domain names that you are looking to have developed you should know one of two things; if you want to work with us that is.

Have an overall game plan for your domain name when looking to have us partner with you in return for our services. Or the budget you have available to develop your domain name. Way to many people are emailing us asking us to provide a detailed outline for them on how they should, or we would, develop their domain names.

Here is some info to consider before reaching out to us to ‘partner’ on your project.

Partnering on developing your domain names.

We get domains submitted all the time asking us for our advise and partnership on developing their domains. Many aren’t good at all, and those few that do have some good domains have an extreme one sided approach to the partnership. Something like, you lay out the plan, time, and money to develop the domain and if it starts making money we will give you a percentage of the profit. The kicker is that they aren’t willing to sign any agreements but insist that if we can produce great results we will be happy with what they will give us!

When we ask them for their thoughts on how they see the best use of the domain, or how they envisioned developing it, silence. No feedback, no ideas. Just a response that they want us to provide that information to them.

They also don’t want to commit to a legal agreement on percentage until they get results!

If this is the type of partnership you are looking for then we aren’t the team for you!

The same holds true when looking to pay us to develop and market your domain names; to lease them, sell them, or monetize them in other ways. If you don’t have a great domain name you should have a dedicated budget. Developing domain names take time and requires the technical and online marketing know-how of experts to obtain the desirable ROI.

Quick post to a domain after sale and the start of a tough recovery

So we are finally home today! My wife is down, but not out! It is a hard road to recovery but we have so much to look forward to. It has been tough, but not compared to what many others are recovering from, or dying from. We are counting our blessings and appreciate all we have, and all the life we have to live ahead of us.

Sitting in the hospital for six days as allowed me to catch up on some reading, actually reading, as I typically listen to one or two audio books per day, for the past few years. I was able to read 5 books in 5 1/2 days.

In reading these books some lessons were learned. In Succeed and Grow Rich Through Persuasion – Learning from adversity – Adversity is a part of life. Every act, situation, or choice of our lives contains cause and effect. In adversities we have situations in which we are made very much aware of the effect. The cause may be known, or it may be elusive or incomprehensible. We experience a very personal, significant reaction, a strong emotion is stirred within us, and we ask, “Why?”. Every adversity carries within it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit. If we can capture this truth, and can accept the fact that this universe is governed by immutable laws which are part of a creative force, no matter how difficult it may be to see the reason – then we can ride out an storm which besets our lives. Your attitude in time of adversity determines much of its eternal effect on your life – for good or ill.

In The Secret what stood out… ‘This is your life, and it’s been waiting for you to discover it! Up until now you may have been thinking that life is hard and a struggle, and so by the law of attraction you will have experienced life as hard and a struggle. Begin right now to shut to the universe, “Life is easy! Life is so good! All good things come to me!”

A great read was If Life Is A Game These Are The Rules. I will probably read this book again, and again, and then again with a pen and notebook!20140914_170656

While I was sitting there 14 hours a day with my wife one chapter of the book really resonated with me. It had to due with fairness.

Before the surgery, once we found out that my wife had a brain tumor the immediate question she had was WTF, why me? And questions of how this could have happened to her and why did it happen to her; it’s not fair, was something mentioned over and again.

But the lesson taught here came before the surgery even began, when Ahmad, an employee of ours had responded to me once he had learned the news of my wife’s diagnosis – ‘May Allah bless you”, and he quickly added, “however you live in the greatest country in the world, with the best healthcare system and doctors in the world, so surely your wife will be ok.”

This led me to immediately think, even before ‘knowing’ what the outcome would be, that we were in fact luckily.

The quote on Fairness in If Life Is A Game These Are The Rules that taught me the lesson through this experience was – “I cried because I had no shoes until I saw a man who had no feet.”

The surgery left my wife with a tough road ahead of us, in lots of pain, unable to walk or even see yet, but other patients in the hospital weren’t ever going home.

How lucky were we indeed.

Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff…and it’s all small stuff

In Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff…and it’s all small stuff reading chapter 26 – “Set Aside Quiet Time, Every Day” what I realized is that I rarely have a moment of Quiet Time, true quiet time; not listening to an audio book, thinking of other projects, clients, work to be completed, family life, friends, goals, dreams, etc…

I couldn’t even remember the last time I quieted my mind and just tuned out. So that is exactly what I did. It lasted about 10 minutes or so, and I fell asleep!

I was quickly woken to nurses needing to change IV bags, take vitals, and run other tests, but this is something I am going to continue working on…getting some quality quiet time into my life moving forward!

Another ‘lucky’ thing to point out as well was that out of all the rooms we could have obtained, we had one with an awesome view of the Hudson river and the George Washington Bridge. Unfortunately she could not enjoy the view, but when she gets better I will take her for dinner in the Manhattan, somewhere over looking the Hudson River, so she can enjoy the view as well!

I will be working from my home office for the next few weeks, caring for all of her needs, and keeping the ship steaming forward.

As always we have some really exciting projects we are working on, have some great domain names we will be offering for lease, and have a small portion of our portfolio we might be putting up for sale. I looking forward to sharing more info on these projects and domain names soon.

Domain Name Sold

So it has been a few weeks that I have had a chance to post updated news about what has been going on, and information about the pending domain name sale (beholdawhitehorse.com) that I had posed about here – pending domain name sale.

So in short I sold the domain name through Godaddy and received $4000 dollars for the domain name.

The excitment of my first domain name sale (technically second as I transfered a domain name to a client a few months ago) quickly came to an end, and the good life got really, really bumpy when my wife went to the hospital ER on August 23rd for bad headaches and vertigo and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Words can not describe the shock and emotions that came with the doctors reporting on their findings. Because she is so young the doctors at this hospital (Jacobi Medical Center) did not want to provide the operation neded, as they stated they were not equipped to provide the care she should receive, and they suggested that we immediately reach out to one of the major medical centers in NYC. So after 4 days in the hospital we brought her home and started seeking the best brain tumor surgeon in NYC.

We had to act quick because this type of rare brain tumor, a tumor in the fourth ventricle with mild associated hydrocephalus, is causing swelling in her head, and is blocking the spinal fluid circulation to her brain.

Everyone around us have been great; family, friends, co-workers, employees, our team in Pakistan (thanks Ahmad!!!), and the support we have received. Having a network of support is critical in hard times like these, and we are greatful for the network of awesome people we have in our lives.

Luck fell on us because we were referred to, and were quickly able to get an appointment with Dr Jeffrey Bruce at Columbia University Neurological Institute of New York (BIO) and he took the case and scheduled surgery for next Wednesday morning (09/10/2014). It is all happening so fast and is so scary…but we have to hold it together not just for ourselves, but for our 4 boys.

We are looking forward to her very fast recovery and getting back into full swing with domain development, domain name leasing, and now domain name sales!

Domain Name Selection

Here at eProperty Lease we are currently building out domain names for our clients and ourselves. For about 1 year we have been interested in building a domain name community where people can sell domain names, buy domain names, auction off domain names and network with others in a feature rich community website.

Here on our team we have been considering two domain names that we own, and feel are good candidates to build this community on. DN.VU was really a first pick, especially with all of the new tld’s begin launched and the heavy marketing going into it. People are getting more acquainted with non .com’s domains, and here at ePropertyLease.com we understand it really comes down to marketing and providing true value; the later being most important.

Why would a business or someone looking to start an online business lease a domain name?

There are many reasons why someone would want to lease a domain name but some of the most common reasons are price and availablity. When a domain name investor or individual owns the domain name you want, and is not willing to sell it off, leasing the domain name might be the only optin. The Internet is getting bigger every day, and domain names have now become a commodity, and for investors, domain name investing is a great way to build immediate equiton when buying a premium domain name. Domain Name Investors (Domainers) buy domain name to either hold to flip for a profit at a later date, or monetize or devlop to generate cash flow on their investment.

At eProperty Lease we are active domain name investors that focus mostly on developing, monetizing and leasing our domain names. As domainers we actually love what we do. To us we are either ‘creating or dying’ on a daily basis. This is a passion; an addiction, and we are always looking to network with other domainers to learn all we can, and share anything we can.

Domainers

As a domainer I have traveled down the ‘long road of trial and error’. Unfortunately I have not had a great ‘mentor’ or been surrounded by other successful domainers to teach me all the tricks of the trade. This has lead me to fail a thousand times for myself, but in failure I have continued to aquire the knowledge of what not to do, and the understanding of how to make a profit in this industry. Today I have a domain portfolio of about 1000 domains, but more importantly I not only make enough to cover the cost of the registration fee’s, my domains and online businesses create enough profit to pay for those who work for our company; developers, sales agents, SEO experts and administrative personal.

The purpose of mentioning all of this is to encourage those who have just set out on the path of domaining, or those who have been involved in internet real estate investing, online businesses, and internet marketing but feel there is no light at the end of the tunnel. It has taken me along time to get where I am at, lots of hard work, sacrifice and the desire to want to make it happen!

Being a domainer might not be easy, but it sure is great when it all finally starts to come together.

Should you buy and flip domain names or develope them?

Domaining is the business of making money with domain names by either flipping them for a profit or developing them into income producing websites.

Many of my friends and clients ask me how they can become a successful domainer, and want information on getting started in domaining which is why I have started to share my story.

I hope that you can avoid some of the mistakes I have made over the years when I would buy way too many bad domain names, spend way too much money and time on the wrong things, and getting sucked deeper into the internets black hole of information overload!

Still after all of these years online, I still love buying domain names, developing websites, meeting new people, and moving towards the day I am one of the great domainers like Frank Schilling (Yes I dream big!) or Rick Schwartz.

There is one great truth about domaining that keeps me going. Many domainers make a lot of money selling domain names.

I am not one of the domainers that make a lot of money selling domain names! A matter of fact I make no money selling domain names.

Developing Domain Names

My domain portfolio has fluctuated between 1000 and 2500 domain names over the last 7 years, and I have been buying domain names since 2001. In 2001 when I started buying domain names (had less then 10) I never even thought I would ever own more then those few; but as most domainers know, this turns into an addiction!

The domain names I buy I hold. My intention is to develope these domain names into money making websites. Before the Panda/Penguin update by Google I was making some decent money with adsense (enough to cover the registration fees and then some), but adsense has not made me the millions others have claimed it earned them.

It used to be easy to throw together one page websites that ranked really well, and were loaded with Google ad’s that made you money, but now it takes more time and effort to get the same results. So now I spend more time and effort to get these results! (Ugh)

I have domain names that I have developed into actual websites that earn me over $1000 a month, and sometimes generate leads that make thousands a month, and then some months these same websites only generate a few hundred dollars. But to me this is awesome. I mean where else can I make an $8 dollar or so investment and make thousands of dollars from that investment legally! This is why I am hooked; actually I am a domain name addict (will get into that in another post).

I actually got really good at monetizing domains that I now have started to manage other people’s domain name portfolio’s! I am also working on creating a website to list the domains I manage and let people contact us to buy or lease them. I am also helping others develope many of their domain names so that they can cover the cost of owning them, and begin to actual start making a profit!

I still remember that one of my very first stated goals when I started (pre panda) was to own 1000 domain names, have 1000 websites online, and to earn $1 dollar a day off of each website. Now that many of my one page websites have been wiped off the face of the planet I have been focusing more on buying up domain names that relate to the websites I do really well with, and then build them out to increase my inbound leads.

For me, my whole life as a domainer has been on domain name development, but this might change really soon as I want to try my hand at selling domain names!

So to circle back to the title of this post, ‘Should you buy and flip domain names or develope them?’, my only advice is to learn as much as you can from all of the great domainers out there! You have to love this and be ready to invest lots of time (and most likely money). You also have to have a can do attitude and know that there is still tons of great opportunity to become very successful doing this. My success has been in developing domain names, but many other great domainers flip them.

There is no better time to get started then now!
