Do you have a domain ‘investment’ addiction?
I do. But I’m working on it. I’ve registered thousands of domain names over the years, maintained a domain portfolio hovering around 2000 for years. I often wonder how many others suffer some form of domain name addiction as well?
It was getting bad, every time I watched the news, read a new book or ‘had the inside scoop’ on something a domain name was registered for it!
But over the last few years I painstakingly admitted and forced myself through withdrawal periods. Letting go of domains ‘I knew’ where amazing investments to add to my domain name portfolio. I seemed to be dealing with my domain name addiction, and the withdrawals of letting hundreds go until something set me totally off course.
I sold a domain name I had registered years before. I wasn’t even looking to sell it, but Godaddy contacted me with a buyer, and when all was said and done I made almost $4000 profit on the sale. The domain name was BeholdaWhiteHorse.com and the buyer was Carl Rinsch (that is who the Registrant Name changed to once it was sold and remains as). The crazy thing is that I wasn’t even going to sell it for $4000 dollars, but some major life events happened (will share more about it at a later time) which led me to just ‘settle’ for four G’s.
But the truth of the matter is I am not in the business of selling domain names. I have had success developing and leasing domain names to local companies here in NYC, as well as companies throughout NY and mostly other states in the U.S. I have served clients from Germany to South Africa, and down to Playa Del Carmen / Tulum Mexico. All because developed and ranked domain names provided the connection point to these clients.
So the domain buying addiction comes into play because ‘I know’ I can keep scaling the business as serving more clients by continuing to develop and rank the domain names I register. But where does it all end? (12 step program for domain addicts??? lol )
Domain Addiction or Future Revenue Streams?
This is the question I keep asking myself when reviewing my domain name portfolio, and when I’m about to register more domain names. Is this my domain addiction rearing its ugly head or am I purchasing good domains that I will be able to develop and create additional revenue streams from? My new rule of thumb is to steer towards service domain names that focus on particular areas. This has always worked for me and these are the domains that I have also found easiest rank and to lease out. (Domains like NYCPlumbingCompany.com, etc…)
One thing I know for sure is that I’m always planting seeds today to harvest at a later time. (I’m sharing a whole lot more about this in the eBook I’m working on). Also I want to thank everyone who has emailed me with words of encouragement about the eBook…it’s coming along and I can’t wait to share it! In the meantime keep the emails coming with any questions or those looking for advice on developing, ranking and leasing domain names.
Also if you have some domain name addiction or domain investing stories to share I would love to hear about them!
